Virgil Abloh’s collaboration with Nike is viewed by many as one of, if not the most influential collaboration in sneaker history. From OFF-WHITE Air Jordan 1’s to his reimagined Converse Chuck Taylor’s, Virgil Abloh’s work has been all encompassing.
The work of Virgil can be traced back to his beginnings, wherein he described himself as “a kid who would sleep with a Nike Air Jordan 5 at the end of the bed just so I could see it in the morning.” We can see this influence run even deeper through a quote he gave to Complex, saying “My friend Chris Eaton and I used to be so obsessed with Jordan that we were drawing Nike shoes and sending them to Nike and Nike would be like, “Oh, we don’t accept designs.””
Nike’s stance has since changed, with Virgil’s collaboration with Nike to produce ‘The Ten’ collection, a partnership which changed the sneaker game, bringing Virgil’s trademark deconstructed style and 3% rule (a design philosophy which talked about how a creative only has to add a three per cent tweak to a pre-existing concept in order to generate a cultural contribution deemed innovative) to Nike.
The result? 10 of Nike’s iconic silhouettes who maintained their signature and yet, transformed into a pair of shoes which truly say they have Virgil Abloh’s touch on them.
